If you want to install an FCR39 that came from a DR-Z400E onto your DR-Z400SM, you'll have to change a few parts on the carb, first.
There's tons of info on ThumperTalk about such a mod.
The E model FCR39 on my SM was changed like this in order for it to fit properly and make the bike run perfectly:
*Intake manifold and clamps from the E model
*E model throttle cables
*Different carb intake bellmouth from Sudco International to allow SM airbox
boot to fit rear of E model carb
*Removed the coasting enrichener from the side of the carb and plugged the
small nipple with a vacuum cap
*Replaced the #60 pilot air jet with a #100
*Replaced the stock DXP needle with an EMN needle (clip on 3rd groove
down)
*Main jet replaced with a #160
*Fuel screw 2-and-a-half turns out
*Removed Throttle Position Sensor (thingy with the electrical wires)
